The EarthShip Assessment is a new tool designed to empower and guide anyone who strives to answer the above questions in a complex world full of invisible dangers. I know that sounds dramatic, but geez, I had no idea what I was in for when the idea for the EarthShip Assessment came forward.
In addition to our physical body, we have an energy body similar to the picture above adapted from "Emerging Light" by Barbara Brennan.
This is our 'EarthShip'. When we think of a ship, usually we think of a protective shell. However our energy body, and our physical body too, is porous and interactive with all that is around us. Trauma and influences like drugs or excessive alcohol can damage this energy field.
This is what the EarthShip Assessment Chart looks like, showing the different areas that are recognized to impact health:

No one else holds the responsibility for your or your children's health.
Each individual in their uniqueness will have a unique chart appropriate to their health and well-being at the time of assessment. In reality, many of these areas overlap. For example, our beliefs and the emotional environment influence diet, which may also overlap with chemical toxins. Screen time (the time spent in front of some screen - TV, computer, tablet, cell phone, etc) may overlap with EMF toxicity. The chart would look more like a multicolored flower.
Anyone may use this chart by going step by step, or using kinesiology, or intuition, or by just asking for insight and understanding for how this area is affecting their child.
Below is a brief outline of the areas with comments. Often an author feels their area is the most important - and that may or may not be true for you or your child at this time. Duh! They can't all be the most important! So choose what feels right for you...
This can be one of the most challenging, and important areas to work with. Challenging because of availability, time, and/or cost. Important because for most, if not all children, how they eat as children affects their whole life (See ADHD Breakfast and 'Food Therapy: The Right Diet for ADHD Symptoms').
Sandy Nemark says "I have conducted nutritional interventions for hundreds of patients with ADHD during the past 24 years. In many cases, dietary changes have not only improved the symptoms of hyperactivity, concentration, and impulsivity, but have also calmed oppositional behavior."
These are some of the hazards of typical American diet:
- Pesticides, herbicides and fungicides -
- Additives in processed food -
- GMO foods -
- Hormones & Antibiotics (meat & produce) -
- Bioaccumulation (heavy metals, chemicals) from other sources -
- Acid/Alkaline imbalance -
Emotional environment has a major impact on health, whether as a child or an adult, and can lead to belief systems that create failure.
A child in an abusive environment can always be in fight or flight response which both stresses the physical body and ties up most of the mental and emotional energy. This is also true if the abuse or conflict is just directed between the parents. The presence of a bully at school (or workplace), or even a critical teacher can also cause major stress.
As a parent, if you can be open to change within yourself, miracles can happen.
Shelly Lefkoe has a great support site in this area. She says "Learn insights that help you raise happier, healthier children who become mature, wise, and creatively engaged adults. And in the process, let go of the outdated beliefs that lead you to be less than your loving best.
Thoughts and Beliefs
My favorite reference here is Dr. Daniel Amen's book 'Mind Coach' - it is only 39 pages and written simply and effectively. He says "Everything starts and ends in your mind. How your mind works determines how happy you are, how successful you feel and well you interact with other people. The patterns of your mind encourage you toward greatness or they cause you to flounder in mediocrity or worse. Learning how to focus and direct your mind is the most important ingredient of success.
- how every thought you have affects every cell in your body
- how your thought affect your mind and your body
- how negative thoughts ruin school performance, friendships, and family interactions
- how to identify ANT's (automatic negative thoughts) that invade your mind
- how to exterminate ANT's
- how to think in ways that enhance your chances for success in whatever you do"
Chemicals are invisible and found in our food, water, air, and fire (if you have a gas cook stove), along with our homes, clothing, bedding, toys, cleaners, soaps, computers and any other area I may have missed.
Children under the age of 6 are particularly susceptible because the brain-blood barrier hasn't fully formed and chemicals can reach the brain, our most fragile organ. This is true for the fetus too, so avoiding chemicals for the mother is highly important.
Eating organic foods is also important not only because it avoids many chemicals, but because it supports the body in being able to eliminate chemicals that come into the body.
This is a huge area and more will be added later.
This is another invisible one.
- 'Dirty' Electricity, which refers to high frequency
- Cell phone and microwave towers
- Portable phones (home)
- Power lines
- TV's, clocks, and other electronics
For centuries and perhaps millennia, knowledge was passed down orally in cultures both east and west. The development of paper and the printing press made knowledge available independent of another person, though not everyone is inclined to learn from printed word.
In the 1950’s television became common, in the 1990’s laptop computers, and in the last ten years tablets and smartphones. Although the technology is amazing, particularly for someone remembering black and white TV, the value for children is limited and can be highly detrimental.
Looking at a screen (TV, computer, tablet or phone) is not part of the natural evolution of humankind.
Whatever is shown on a screen, has been created by someone else and to some degree has the ability to change how we feel about and interpret life. The effectiveness, - how much a presentation (such as an advertisement) can influence behavior, has a direction relation (re: incentive) to how much money is transferred (put in someone else’s pocket) for influencing people’s behavior (for purchasing, voting, enlisting, brand 'loyalty', etc).
Although debated (there’s a lot at stake here), here are some of the reasons put forward to limit screen time for children.* These reasons aren't presented as absolute truth, but as information to consider when deciding how much time your child spends in front of a screen:
1. Rapid brain growth
Between 0 and 2 years, infant's brains triple in size, and continue in a state of rapid development to 21 years of age. Stimulation to a developing brain caused by overexposure to technologies (cell phones, internet, iPads, TV), has been shown to be associated with executive functioning and attention deficit, cognitive delays, impaired learning, increased impulsivity and decreased ability to self-regulate, e.g. tantrums (Small 2008, Pagini 2010).
2. Delayed Development
Technology use restricts movement, which can result in delayed development. One in three children now enter school developmentally delayed, negatively impacting literacy and academic achievement. Movement enhances attention and learning ability. Use of technology under the age of 12 years is detrimental to child development and learning.
3. Epidemic Obesity
TV and video game use correlates with increased obesity. Largely due to obesity, 21st century children may be the first generation many of whom will not outlive their parents.
4. Sleep Deprivation
75% of children aged 9 and 10 years are sleep deprived to the extent that their grades are detrimentally impacted.
5. Mental Illness
Technology overuse is implicated as a causal factor in rising rates of child depression, anxiety, attachment disorder, attention deficit, autism, bipolar disorder, psychosis and problematic child behavior.
Violent media content can cause child aggression. The U.S. has categorized media violence as a Public Health Risk due to causal impact on child aggression.
7. Digital dementia
High speed media content can contribute to attention deficit, as well as decreased concentration and memory, due to the brain pruning neuronal tracks to the frontal cortex.
As parents attach more and more to technology, they are detaching from their children. In the absence of parental attachment, detached children can attach to devices, which can result in addiction. One in 11 children aged 8-18 years are addicted to technology.
9. Radiation emission
In May of 2011, the World Health Organization classified cell phones (and other wireless devices) as a category 2B risk (possible carcinogen) due to radiation emission. James McNamee with Health Canada in October of 2011 issued a cautionary warning stating "Children are more sensitive to a variety of agents than adults as their brains and immune systems are still developing, so you can't say the risk would be equal for a small adult as for a child."
